Checking Your Hard Disk for Errors Using Windows Disk Error Checker

Posted by: Mark

Asides from all the fancy tools and software for optimizing and maintaining your computer, one that Window’s provides is the Disk Error Checker tool. It is an important tool that finds and fixes errors within your Windows install. If any files are out of place or broken this tool mends them.

It will require a restart of your computer after completion and may take some time to complete depending on the amount of data in your computer. The process itself is started after your computer loads up again; this is why it requires the restart.

Locating And Running Windows Disk Error Checker

You will find this tool one of 2 ways but the simplest way is to locate your C drive which is inside “My Computer”. Once inside My Computer you will see your C drive, usually labelled “Local Disk”.

Right click on your C drive and click onto “properties”. In here you will find another tab called “Tools”. Enter into that menu and locate “Error Checking” and click on “Check Now”.

You should see options there for “automatically fix system errors” and “scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors”. Check both these boxes and confirm. This is where you will be prompted to allow a restart of your computer or to restart later. Upon restarting, the error checker will scan for and fix any errors.

NOTE: You will also notice another important tool in where you found the error checker. “Disk Defragment”, this should also be routinely used around the same time you check your Window’s hard disk for errors. Around once a month is optimum.
